Goan Fish Curry Recipe

 

Goan fish curry

Prep Time: 5 minutes | Cook Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 20 minutes | Servings: 2 People

INGREDIENTS

6 dried whole red chillies
1 tablespoon cumin
2 teaspoon coriander seeds
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
2 teaspoon ground turmeric
3 garlic cloves
3cm piece ginger
2 tablespoons white vinegar
2 tablespoons vegetable oil1 onion,
Thinly sliced 1 ripe tomato,
Chopped 3 large green chillies -Seeded and sliced thinly
440 g can coconut milk
Salt to your taste
800 g fillets flat head or another tasty fish, halved or sliced

METHOD


Using a spice grinder blend of chillies, cumin, coriander, mustard seeds and turmeric to be made into a fine powder. In a pestle and mortar crush garlic and ginger to a fine paste.

Add spice powder and incorporate well into the ginger paste.

Mix in vinegar.

In a large deep frying pan heat oil.

Add onion and fry until slightly coloured.

Add spice paste and fry for 3 minutes until fragrant.

Add tomato and chilli and cook for 10 minutes or until tomato breaks down.

Add coconut milk, season with salt and then add fish fillets.

Bring to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes, turn fish over and let simmer for remaining 5 minutes or until fish is cooked as desired.Simmering time can differ based on size of fillet used.

Goan fish curry is best had with basmati rice / or Indian long grain rice.

Rice, seafood, coconut, vegetables, meat, pork and local spices are some of the main ingredients in Goan cuisine. The area is located in a tropical climate, which means that spices and flavors are intense. Use of kokum is another distinct feature.Goan food is considered incomplete without fish.

Background of the Recipe Name:

Most Indians would know that  the name of this fish curry comes from  “GOA” which is a small coastal  town in western India.

Fish is a staple diet of the Goan people from India and this Goan fish recipe is a popular Indian dish all over India. It brings together Indian spices and coconut milk to create a yummy fish curry that will rival many other similar Asian fish curry dishes.

I love a good fish curry recipe and this easily beats one of my other favourites the “Thai Green fish chicken curry ” that could easily be used to prepare a chicken curry too” 😉

    Excellent recipe !, I only change did was to replace the fish with vegetable. It was yummy. Thanks for sharing.
